CHRISTUS NEWS
WOMEN HAVE
a new ally at
CHRISTUS Hospital
–
St. Mary: a
nurse navigator for breast health.
The position has been made possible
by an $85,000 grant from the Avon
Foundation for Women awarded to
the CHRISTUS Health Foundation –
Southeast Texas.
Janet Sewell, RN, nurse naviga-
tor, is available at St. Mary to help
patients in south and mid-Jefferson
County coordinate any follow-up
care that may be necessary after a
screening mammogram.
What is navigation?
Navigation programs help women
address abnormal test results quick-
ly, says CHRISTUS general surgeon
Barry Miller, MD.
These programs lead to better
survival rates, says Jane Rawls, RN,
interim chief nursing executive. “The
nurse navigator helps remove barri-
ers to care.”
The nurse navigator may:
➜
➜
Schedule appointments.
➜
➜
Find transportation or financial
assistance.
➜
➜
Help allay fears.
“That helps decrease the patient’s
stress,” Miller says.
CHRISTUS Hospital was the
first to bring breast health naviga-
tion to Southeast Texas in 2009 at
St. Elizabeth and is now the only
hospital in the region to offer breast
health navigation at two facilities.
“Navigation is free to all pa-
tients,” Sewell says. “That’s true
whether or not you had your screen-
ing mammogram here.”
The grant from the Avon
Foundation for Women also funds
a bimonthly conference of all of
the medical experts on a case. This
conference helps each patient and
her doctor get the best possible
information to make treatment
decisions.

recognition
When you or someone you
love has cancer, it’s only natural
that you seek the best cancer
care available.
One way to know you’ve
found it is that a hospital has
been recognized and accred-
ited by the Commission on
Cancer (CoC). That’s the case
with CHRISTUS Hospital –
St. Elizabeth and St. Mary.
CHRISTUS Hospital is the
only community hospital in
Southeast Texas whose cancer
program has earned CoC ac-
creditation. It’s a distinction
that offers substantial benefits
for patients.
CoC accreditation indicates
that patients have access to a
comprehensive cancer program
with a full range of services,
including:
✓
✓
Prevention.
✓
✓
Early diagnosis and
evaluation.
✓
✓
Optimal treatment.
✓
✓
Rehabilitation and support.
Earning this distinction also
gives the dedicated medical
staff at CHRISTUS Hospital ac-
cess to a host of CoC resources,
including participation in the
National Cancer Database.
These resources will help to
improve and maintain cancer
care at CHRISTUS Hospital.
