Thanks
for bearing
with us
A SPECIAL
place for women and babies
at CHRISTUS Hospital
–
St. Elizabeth has
undergone a rebirth of sorts. And you’re sure
to love the look.
The Center for New Life on the hospi-
tal ’s third f loor is home to the labor and delivery area.
We asked you to bear with us while we went through
what hospital off icials affectionately called a nine-
month labor of love. Now that work is done, and a more
comfortable and modern environment awaits new
moms and families.
Modern and cozy, like home
The unit has 19 birthing suites, where women expe-
rience labor, delivery and recovery in one room. Each
spacious and private room features a bed for guests,
comfortable furniture, a whirlpool bath, and clothing
storage.
Thanks to an impres-
sive makeover, those rooms
are even more inviting with
updated furnishings and a
pleasing new color scheme
and warm wood tones.
“The area is brighter,
lighter and more airy,” says
unit director Amy Leleux, RN.
“It appears more spacious with
the lighter colors.”
Some of the updated touches
include:
➜
➜
Floral artwork.
➜
➜
Modern bath and light
fixtures.
➜
➜
32-inch flat-screen TVs.
➜
➜
New flooring.
A birthing area is a special part of a hospital; people
are usually here on happy terms. And now women have a
more luxurious environment in which to experience the
occasion.
“When you’re coming to the hospital for a joyous
Birthing center
renovations are complete
occasion, you’re certainly going to be
more attuned to how your environment
looks,” says Pamela St. Amand, MD,
obstetrician/gynecologist.
Family focus
While the look is more welcoming, the
experienced and caring staff is the same,
says Ruthie Robinson, PhD, RN, interim
chief nursing officer and director of
Women’s and Children’s Services. “It looks great now to
match the great nurses,” she says.
The center isn’t just where babies are born.
Services such as birthing, sibling and infant care
classes are offered long before labor begins.
“The baby is born into a family, so we try to in-
corporate the family into the plan of care accord-
ing to each patient’s wishes,” Leleux says.
For visitors, there’s a renovated waiting room
that now includes a large TV and coffee bar. So
family and friends can enjoy a steaming cup of
coffee while awaiting that new arrival.
There’s more
In addition to the new look, other upgrades
enhance workflow and delivery of services,
enhance patient privacy, and provide a higher
standard of care. They include:
➜
➜
A newly remodeled nurses’ station.
➜
➜
Advanced new fetal monitoring software
that can link to a patient’s electronic health
record.
The obstetrics/gynecology services and surgery
suites, also on the third f loor, are now complete as well
and match the beautiful new look of the rest of the
f loor.
